The Mississippi Free Press quoted NAACP's Abre' Conner regarding an xAI facility: "Our communities are not playgrounds for corporations who are chasing profit over people. xAI's first data center is already creating pollution for Mississippi's neighbors in Memphis ... and now they are polluting in Southaven, Mississippi."
In North Carolina, communities are mobilizing around what users describe as "Project Delta" in Stokes County, with residents demanding "health safeguards, moratoriums and community benefits." One North Carolina resident told reporters, according to posts: "We don't want to be hustled."
Michigan residents are also voicing concerns, with posts indicating that "many residents feel they have little protection" despite some existing safeguards, noting "big gaps around water use, transparency and enforcement."

The discussion suggests this is not isolated pushback but a coordinated pattern across regions. Not everyone in the online conversation sees data centers as purely negative. Jigar Shah, who identifies as being with the Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office, posted: "Communities are pushing back on data centers—and they're right.
